Thanks a lot to Birger Thøgersen for reaching out to me and for writing this portrait conveying some of the things on my journey in music that has occurred, inspired and shaped me so far. Of course it’s only a handful of one’s life that can be included, so not all people, things and facts are mentioned here. But I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to everyone I have met on my way in music and life, and to everyone who have chosen and choose to listen to my music. I am truly grateful ❤️🙏🎶

Here below are a few words about the album that was very wellreceived by the press. More info at https://www.lillysongs.com/news

“Authenticity, intensity and nerve” /

GAFFA ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“ her interpretations offer an emotionally deep, truthful view, due to which these standards thus become her own songs” / Jazzthing, Germany

““Fresh interpretations of the great American songbook” / Politiken ❤️❤️❤️❤️

“ LILLY: The Song is you |
Charming, fresh and airy, but also profound and full of delicate power, that's how the music of Lilly sounds.
(…) Lilly has taken the title to heart. She becomes one with these jazz songs. The singer has created very personal interpretations together with the Israeli guitarist Gilad Hekselman and the US cornet player Kirk Knuffke. Hekselman in particular becomes a perfect one-man orchestra on the album: rhythm, harmony, even melody and atmosphere, he delivers all this with brilliant ease and pithy grounding. Kirk Knuffke's cornet adds a tastefully tense tonal spice. A lively, extremely appealing album is what Lilly's "The song is you" has become. A discovery worth making!"

/ Bayerisher Rundfunk -Klassik/Jazztime

“Lilly tells with her warm voice and her heartfelt expression that she is able to give these immortal songs, which have been recorded thousands of times, something deeply personal” / Tor Hammerø, Nettavisen & Tor de Jazz, Norge

Gilad Hekselman & Kirk Knuffke! I at least understood the word... „grossartig“ ☺️... but after one more listen, I now also heard expressions like: “sensationell schön“... „personality pure“... „unmittelbar“.. „unverkünstlich“ 🙏❤️ If you understand (some) German like me (or maybe just enjoy to listen to it), then you can listen to the talk between Beate Sampson, Roland Spiegel and Ulli Habersetzer from about 44:17.
Here’s the link:
https://www.br-klassik.de/themen/jazz-und-weltmusik/hoeren-wir-gutes-13042021-jazztime-100.html
The program should be available for a week! ☀️🌱🌸

They also wrote very nicely about it on the program-website. Here is a translation in English:

"LILLY: The Song is you |
Charming, fresh and airy, but also profound and full of delicate power, that's how the music of Lilly sounds.
Lilly-Ann Hertzmann, singer from Denmark, has named her new album "The Song is you" and on it there are mainly jazz standards. And: Lilly has taken the title to heart. She becomes one with these jazz songs.
“Fresh interpretations of the great American songbook.

Vocalist Lilly interprets low-key iconic standards and manages to coax new aspects and add something new - thanks in part to elegant accompaniment by guitar and cornet.

It's brave what Danish vocalist Lilly tries on her latest longplayer. In more ways than one.

Firstly, it's cheeky to name the release after the standard 'The Song Is You', that wonderful 1932 ballad written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein for the show 'Music In The Air'. For 55 years ago, another Danish (though Portuguese-born) legend, Pedro Biker, released an album of the same title - and it's an unobtainable cult classic, costing the same as a Y chair in a reasonably playable vinyl copy. So those are big shoes to step into, one must say.

Secondly, The Great American Songbook is such a thoroughly anthological phenomenon that one can get quite weary just thinking about yet another rendering of its greatest hits, 'That Old Feeling' (which Chet Baker delivered a somewhat definitive version of on 'Chet Baker Sings' way back in 1954) or the title track, which in addition to Biker also has a certain Frank Sinatra on the list of interpreters. Just to name a few.

Fortunately, you can pack your anxiety and ennui away in the drag box. For while Lilly may not revolutionize the way we look at the songs we know and love, she and her musical cronies perform them with an immediacy and a willingness to tune out the minutiae that actually makes them sound fresh and anything but spoiled. That in itself is a commendable achievement, when the field of both standards interpreters and jazz vocalists is so strong, historic and current.

Lilly, whose name on her birth certificate is Lilly-Ann Hertzman and who has several highly acclaimed albums to her credit, joins quite a broad musical stream as a vocalist: her bright voice and artless, clean delivery speak of kinship with Monica Zetterlund, our own Lise Reinau and other voices.

Her strength is not so much a strong swinging attack, but an ingratiating and melodic approach to the material. She sings the songs without deconstructive mannerisms or contrived rephrasings. And there's no need to knock her for that when we're dealing with evergreens that have long since proven their worth beyond the individual vocalist or arranger.

Guitarist Gilad Hekselman stands distinguished beside her with his extremely calm, pristine and thoughtful guitar playing. Like her, he doesn't strain unnecessarily to twist melodies out of joint, creating never-before-heard sounds and tones. In return, he creates low-key beauty that almost makes your eardrums spin like a cuddly cat.

It's just so delicious to listen to, and when cornet player Kirk Knuffke, who is no stranger to Danish jazz listeners, among other things because of his fine collaboration with the New Jungle Orchestra, joins in the fun with his discreet modernism and soft tone, the music lifts itself a level.

That's the detail

Very often the payoff is in the detail on second listen. As when Freddie Hubbard's - indeed, not just the most obvious stuff from the treasure chest of songs - 'Up Jumped Spring' is given some subtle colouratura as a musical counterpoint to the melody line. Elsewhere, listen out for Hekselman's percussion work, which is also both funky shit and elegant pulse underscoring.

Most original is probably the version of the folk classic 'Scarborough Fair', which makes most people think of the pop duo Simon & Garfunkel and their 1966 LP 'Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme'. But it's a good one to forget. Instead, the traditional song is served up in an ethereal-sounding version, with Knuffke's spiritual horn bringing to mind our own Palle Mikkelborg. Hekselman creates an edge, and everything blends into a wonderful whole.

Lilly is also a fine songwriter. And her 'Five Wild Geese' is an example of that.

It's a lovely record, nothing less. It may well become a regular on the stereo in the coming months, when the sun is gaining strength and the world is opening up, poof by poof, pleasantly but without chasing”

Here is an translation to English:

“GREAT «NEW» VOICE
Never heard of the Danish vocalist Lilly before? Take it easy - then we are at least two. Now you are warned anyway: she is well worth spending quality time with.

Increasingly, Tor de Jazz is also being noticed far beyond the country's borders. It is of course nice and it has, among other things, led to the meeting with Lilly, who will probably react if she is accused as Lilly-Ann Hertzman as well. It has actually been a very pleasant meeting.

Lilly (47) has had four releases on her conscience since 2006. Much of the material has previously been written by Lilly and one of the albums, "Menneskeblomst", consists of Danish lyrics. On her previous album, "Tenderly" from 2017, it was one of her great musical loves, the American songbook, that was on the repertoire.

The brilliant Israeli but US-resident guitarist Gilad Hekselman was Lilly's only travel companion on "Tenderly", but it was obviously tempting to repeat and when Lilly set course for New York in late summer 2019, Hekselman was booked again for completely understandable reasons.

This time, the exclusive duo has been expanded to a trio of seven of the ten songs. Top-class cornet player, Kirk Knuffke, whom we recently met in another exquisite trio collaboration with Thommy Andersson and Josefine Cronholm, gives this treasure exactly the personal spice it asks for every time he puts the cornet to his lips.

With eight standard songs such as "If You Could See Me Now", "It Might as Well Be Spring" and Horace Silver's "Lonely Woman", as well as an original song and a beautiful version of the trad song "Scarborough Fair", Lilly tells with her warm voice and her heartfelt expression that she is able to give these immortal songs, which have been recorded thousands of times, something deeply personal.

Hekselman, on both electric and acoustic guitar, is so definitely helping to lift the treasure to new places and that it was a warm, relaxed, but at the same time ambitious atmosphere in the studio in Brooklyn the day it was recorded, comes out very clearly through the speakers .

So it took a while before Lilly's and my paths crossed. It was very high time it should show. "The Song Is You" is timeless music for all seasons and for many years.”

The new album, The Song Is You, is rated 17 out of 20, and so is placed in the category: Sehr empfehlenswert, that means: Highly Recommended!
But...furthermore it receives a really nice and thorough review as well! Here is the link to the review in German: https://www.musikansich.de/review.php?id=22117

Here is an English translation:

The subtitle reads: "Feat. Gilad Hekselman & Kirk Knuffke. Yes, there are
three of them. Lilly, real name Lilly-Ann Hertzman is a singer, songwriter
and producer. She hails from Denmark, a child of Japanese and Danish
parents. Her influences range from jazz to the singer/songwriter genre and
folk to pop.

She has been releasing records regularly since 2015, in both English and
Danish. Most recently, there was a duo album with guitarist Gilad Hekselman
in 2017. The Israeli-born musician is also on board for The Song Is You, as
is U.S. cornet player Kirk Knuffke.

What is striking about the album's song selection is that, with the
exception of two tracks ("Scarborough Fair" - a traditional and "Five Wild
Geese" - an original composition), it consists exclusively of jazz
standards. And that usually requires a good hand, especially since as a
listener one may often be inclined to go with originals or other well-known
interpretations. And so I find it very gratifying that the three don't cling
tightly and rigidly to well-known versions of the standards in question, but
invest their own imaginations to create individual interpretations.

"If You Could See Me Now" starts as a pure vocal-guitar duet, with Gilad
Hekselman adding a special accent with his acoustic guitar. This is
extremely sensitively done, the delicate, soft and smooth voice nestling
with the guitar to form a whole, quite dreamy and encouraging to let the
thoughts fly.

"Up Jumped Spring" is one of the seven entries for cornetist Kirk Knuffke,
the other three songs are in duet format. This lightly lilting song shows
Hekselman deftly embellishing the arrangement while also taking on a strong
rhythmic role. And on top of that, he sensitively accommodates his solo
work, giving the song a playful and wide-ranging expression through the
various facets of his guitar playing.

And so all the remaining songs are also strongly marked by the versatility
and wide range of guitarist Hekselman. From my point of view Lilly carries
different elements of expression, from jazz sometimes Abbey Lincoln comes to
the fore, but also the folky variant of a Joni Mitchell should be
considered. All songs have in common that the protagonist conveys a strong
emotional impression through her very sensitive voice, very personally
marked. And this comes especially to the fore in the original composition
"Five Wild Geese". Here, the various musical influences are very aptly
matched and merged.

Kirk Knuffke always brings the strongest jazz part into the songs with his
contributions, influenced by modern oriented trumpet/cornet players. For
example, he is instrumental in "modernizing" Duke Ellington's very familiar
standard, "Prelude To A Kiss." "Scarborough Fair," the traditional English
tune, has become one of the most unusual songs on the album. The origin of
the song in the Middle Ages, including the atmosphere of that time, is
transferred to the present time with what we know from the interpretation of
Simon & Garfunkel, enriched with jazz, to a very individual sound.

“Once again an album on which jazz standards are sung. But in contrast to some other colleagues, the Japanese-Danish singer Lilly and her two New York accompanists Gilad Hekselman (guitar) and Kirk Knuffke (cornet) show that in this so-called supreme discipline of jazz, the motto should always be empathy, surprise and also another level of interpretation. For when an artist dares to tackle such songs as "My Foolish Heart", "Prelude To A Kiss", "That Old Feeling" or "The Song Is You", he wants to emphasize the substance or essence of the song, but ideally also to make a piece sound not immediately recognizable or old-fashioned. Lilly, aka Lilly-Ann Hertzman, succeeds in this, her versions present themselves as artistic with a personal expression.
Lilly: The Song Is You

REVIEW: Stylish, beautiful vocal jazz album
GAFFA

Album / Challenge Records
Release D. 26.03.2021
Reviewed by
Ivan Rod

When Danish/Japanese singer-songwriter/jazz composer and vocalist Lilly-Ann Hertzman released her fourth album, Tenderly, in 2017, it was to overwhelming applause. Critics on several continents deservedly praised her to the skies for the duo album, which featured standards and a collaboration with Israeli/American jazz guitarist Gilad Hekselman.

On her new album, The Song Is You, she is heard again collaborating with Gilad Hekselman, but now also with American cornetist Kirk Knuffke. Again with a simple expression, again with material that consists predominantly of American standards. And again-again with mature gravity, sensuality and character. It's as if Lilly, along with Hekselman - and now Knuffke - has found an authenticity, intensity and nerve that suits her, the songs and the music. The Song Is You is immensely successful for the same reason. Another small work (in a series of releases that should not be put to rest. May Lilly and Hekselman continue their collaboration for many years to come).

The new album features a single song of its own, "Five Wild Geese," which is bold and thoroughly beautiful, and which suits all the other songs from the Great American Songbook with its refreshing pulse. But also noteworthy are Lilly's versions of songs like Victor Young and Ned Washington's "My Foolish Heart," Richard Rodgers' and Oscar Hammerstein's "It Might As Well Be Spring" and Duke Ellington's "Prelude to a Kiss," and indeed of the old British/Scottish folk song, "Scarborough Fair" (immortalized by Simon & Garfunkel in 1968).

Lilly-Ann Hertzman has an incredibly good and seemingly natural grip on the songs/ballads. It's as if they are part of her own musical DNA. As if their swing leans on her own swing. As if her voice is made for them or vice versa. And it's as if her collaboration with Gilad Hekselman is a perfect match. Her warm vocals sneak up on his string playing easily and beautifully. And now, Knuffke's tone as well.

Considering that the entire album was recorded in just one day in New York, one has to take off one's hat and admire the musicality and virtuosity of the three, their respective, innovative starting points and their ability to work together when the record button is activated.

Soundengineer Michael Perez-Cisneros and the crew that day in the studio was doing an amazing job in recording us and making us feel comfortable, for all those good vibes and work thank you is a very small word!

The photographer Gulnara Khamatov was able to jump in with short notice and took a lot of photos during the beginning of the day, I post some of them here below.

A huge THANK YOU to everybody involved. I am grateful and happy and look forward to share the music with you sometime in the future!

Much love,

Danish singer LILLY (-Ann Hertzman) and guitarist Gilad Hekselman touch that bar with Tenderly."

Wow! The line above is just the first one in an incredible review/article in All About Jazz by C. Michael Bailey. Reading it made me have goosebumps, smile and feel very grateful at the same time. Furthermore, his article was released on May 9 2018 over a year ago and I had not heard about it until the other day, when I was very kindly notified about it by the founder/Publisher of All About Jazz, Michael Ricci, as he thought it might be of interest for me. Oh, my...he was right! I hope you will all find it worth reading too somehow. Here are some other extracted lines from it:

" The pair reveal an immediate potent and intimate rapport, one that allows for a broad latitude of interpretation of their chosen material in such a way not to obscure the original melody, instead enhancing it in a very modern way".

"Lilly sings with ever so slightly an accent which supercharges her performances increasing it sexual appeal and allure".

"Hekselman's exacting playing enhances this. On Nick Drake's dark "Voice from the Mountain" Hekselman summons primal tones from his guitar, like that of a garage rock trooper making his way. The pair build dramatic momentum gradually, then allowing it to ebb. The one foreign language piece on the disc, "Hvem Kan Sejle" is paired with the Mancini/Mercer "Whistling Away the Dark" bolstering the Weimar comparison, the music and singing being decadently rich, like dark chocolate. This disc has much to endorse it. More standards from Lilly are in order."

Link to the full article is here beneath as well as a screenshot of the part of the article about my album, Tenderly, which is among seven women-releases that C. Michael Bailey starts by describing as: An embarrassment of riches...

Another really nice review!
Jazz Weekly, a jazzmagazine based in California, has a very nice review in their March issue. I am grateful and happy for it all, and for being mentioned as a FEMALE VOCAL GEM among such great company of singers like Kate McGarry, Madeleine and Sunny Wilkinson !✨ ??

Here are some of the fine words from the review:

"Vocalist Lilly does an impressive collection of cozy duets with guitarist Gilad Hekselman" (...)
"Her voice is warm and calm, and she feels completely relaxed in this setting, using space as a sound..." (...)
" Hekselman delivers dainty intros like flowing drapery on a glistening “Skylark” and sparkling “Day Dream” while some creative pedal work creates a pastoral “You’re Everything. Gentleness and gentility at its best."

Wohooo! ? Another great review of my latest album, Tenderly (feat. Gilad Hekselman)! This time
from Jazz Podium, a major German jazz magazine:
“... listening to her, while she is being accompanied by Gilad - that has the stuff of legend” (....) “Lilly’s authenticity is unsurpassable” (...) “His playing in “Skylark” urges this, all the intros, accompaniments and soli are unique works of art”. (...)
“End result: This duo is a new, very tall, bright lighthouse in the variety of this kind of duo occupation”.
Above quotes are just some of the very nice words from Alexander Schmitz, Jazz Podium. Thank you very much! I am happy and grateful once again! ?☺️

It is my fist review in German and from Germany. So, I made an attempt of a translation to English. It is the right column on the pic-collage...if any comments for better translation, please feel free to let me know ☺️

Gilad Hekselman) was reviewed in the major Danish newspaper, Berlingske this monday January 29, together with some really nice collegues of mine. We were all referred to as "four of the most significant vocalists on the Danish jazzscene" who all recently have released "personal and integrated abums".

I feel grateful, happy and lucky once again for the four stars and more nice words about this album like ".....fine and credible interpretations of songs like Hoagy Carmichaels "Skylark" and Charlie Hadens "First Song" and the Swedish folksong "Vem Kan Segla" here featured in an elegant combination with Henry Mancinis "Whistling Away The Dark" ".

Gilad Hekselman) as Top 5 BEST VOCAL RELEASES 2017 about a month ago, is now featuring a VERY nice and thorough review of the album with many fine words and I am really proud to be able to highlight a section like this:

"Without the palette of colors provided by a full band, her voice almost floats above the at-times minimalistic, yet rich and often suspenseful tapestry provided by guitar. The material could not have been more challenging, inasmuch as it is inevitably associated with interpretations that have made the history of jazz. Yet, Lilly and Hekselman’s arrangements reach almost the impossible of regenerating standards like the title track, “You Go to My Head”, “Skylark” and “Day Dream” to the point of ownership rather than reinterpretation".

And it ends with this sentence: "Tenderly is a truly superb recording, which rightly raises the expectations for her next effort".

I am SO grateful once again! ?✨

I feel lucky to have made it to the pages since I know how hard that is, among all those many great records of all kinds of music.

There were many fine words from the reviewer, Christian Munch-Hansen, that called the album a little pearl and a.o. wrote like this: “...everything seems so natural in her confidential present interpretations with Gilad Hekselman, whose sovereign accompaniment is tonally singing, low-keyed listening and filled with small delicious details”. He gave the album 4 warm hearts too ❤️❤️❤️❤️ ☺️✨

Dear all!

?✨ An almost magical and star spangled take-off and journey so far of my new album, Tenderly (feat. Gilad Hekselman) ends on a really high note that I had never even dared dream of a month ago, when I released it on Dec 1st 2017! I am SO happy and grateful .. and also a little proud as well, to announce that The New York City Jazz Record has chosen to give the album 3 really good gifts in their new January 2018 Issue!

?1) It has been included as one of their TOP 5 “BEST VOCAL RELEASES OF THE YEAR!” ✨???✨ So.. I am now able to see my name and the album title, Tenderly (feat. Gilad Hekselman), surrounded by 4 really amazing jazz singers in this category.. a couple of them being from major labels and Grammy awarded/nominated! ✨☺️✨

? 2) And as if that was not enough, I was notified yesterday that it has also been included in a list of their ✨RECOMMENDED NEW RELEASES✨...and so I found myself being on the same list as the divine queen of jazz and one of my first teachers (though she never knew ;), the one and only...Miss ELLA FITZGERALD !!! ✨????? Wow!

As a third thing.. ?3) The album was also mentioned in their VOX NEWS column as an example of “..the diversity of vocal jazz talent that derives from the Nordic region” ☺️

Oh, my...although, I have known about the first good news for some weeks now, it still feels a bit surreal for me to comprehend all this..including the first 5 star review in Danish music magazine GAFFA on Dec 1st and the last 4,5 Star review in All About Jazz yesterday! Me being a small town girl, living in a small town in the small state of Denmark...having been away from the jazz scene for several years too... or rather, not really having entered it before.
So, dear all.. I am truly happy, grateful and astonished to let you all know that Christmas tales DO come true! And it doesn’t matter how old you are ...☺️

Best wishes for a very HAPPY NEW YEAR 2018 to everyone and THANK YOU so much for everything in 2017!

✨??????? Lots of love and peace, Lilly ❤️

P.S. You can download the new January Issue and more free monthly Issues as pdf-files here: www.nycjazzrecord.com
Or.. if you are in NYC you can also pick up a copy at a lot of various music venues around town✨? ???????
LILLYtag:www.lillysongs.com,2005:Post/49999272017-12-30T14:10:50+01:002019-03-24T09:38:55+01:00BEST OF 2017: Vocal Releases - in The New York City Jazz Review!

Dear All.

I am truly HAPPY & GRATEFUL to let you all know that my latest album, Tenderly (feat. Gilad Hekselman) has been chosen as one of the five BEST VOCAL RELEASES 2017 in The New York City Jazz Record!

I feel proud to be in this category at all, and furthermore to share it with the jazz singers Jazzmeia Horn, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Dominique Eade and Eric Mingus. Wow! A big and warm thanks to everyone at The New York City Jazz Review for the good news!

It is overwhelming and a bit surreal..but in a very nice way! Sometimes life smiles at you and rewards you with good things when you are least expecting it :)

Furthermore, the album is also being mentioned in the VOX NEWS column of the same January Issue of the The New York City Jazz Records (page 11), and it was also featured in the RECOMMENDED NEW RELEASES by the editor, Laurence Donohuse-Greene!

Please visit www.nycjazzrecord.com to download the January Issue for free, or if you happen to be in New York City, you can pick a physical expample up at many venues there all month long!

With much love and gratitude,

I am very happy to have received another nice review of the album, Tenderly (feat. Gilad Hekselman). This time by Niels Overgaard, from the jazzblog, Jazznyt.blogspot.com, who thinks that Gilad and have been able to "....create something new and personal of the wellknown melodies".

You can read it here in Danish: http://jazznyt.blogspot.dk/2017/12/lilly-feat-gilad-hekselman-tenderly.html?m=1

Today it´s December 1st, and I am VERY HAPPY to announce the release of a new album, LILLY: Tenderly (feat. GILAD HEKSELMAN). You can get it for download and streaming worldwide HERE!

It was such a joy to make music together with this amazing, wonderful guitarist and human being one fine Octoberday back in 2015. THANK YOU VERY MUCH, GILAD! Now the result is out for you all to listen to. Hopefully you will enjoy it!

I am also really happy and overwhelmed by the first and very fine review from Ivan Rod/GAFFA, who gives the album ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 STARS! Most of all I am truly happy since he writes about how touched and deeply impressed he is about the music we have made here.To me, that is what making music and singing is all about...to touch someone. If that happens - I feel a joy deep in my heart and soul!

Ivan Rod begins his review like this:

"I am touched and deeply impressed by Lillys new album, Tenderly. Touched and impressed by the Danish jazzsingers vulnerable, minimalistic and almost naked expression. Touched and impressed by her deepfelt, relevant and solid versions of eight of the really great jazzstandards. So touched and impressed, that I have to say, that Tenderly is not only Lillys best releast until date, but one the recent years best Danish vocaljazzalbums!"

....He ends the review with these words:

"The way, in which the two - Lilly and Hekselman - approach the material, is so absolutely poignant and reveals a deep musicality. The voice and the guitar is like a match made in heaven. And the management of the material is poignant".

Thank you very much, Ivan!

You can read the full review in Danish musicmagazine here in GAFFA and in Ivan´s own blog here www.ivanrod.dk

Here is a little bit about Gilad..borrowed from his website www.giladhekselman.com:
